Obituary
Juanita Delores Young, a loving mother and sister was born on July 17th, 1953, to the late
Willie Dowdell and Rosie N. Dowdell (Givner).
She confessed Christ at an early age at New Liberty Baptist Church in Tyler, Alabama. She was
a loving and dedicated wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother. Juanita had a kind and loving spirit which was obvious by always being surrounded by those who loved her most. Juanita
passed away on June 4th, 2021, at home, after a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
The simplest pleasures brought the greatest joy to Juanita. She loved her family and friends which was evidenced by the countless gatherings hosted at the family home in Selma, Alabama. A giving spirit earned her the reputation as the person to turn to in times of need. She expressed her love with an open door, a comforting embrace, a gentle smile, and a hot meal or warm bed. She
was not known to mince words and though her intentions were always born from love she was not afraid to put you in your place.
Juanita leaves to cherish her memory a husband of 32 years, Robert L. Young; children Vicki M.
Dowdell (Mark), Derrick A. Dowdell, and Adrian L. Dowdell; two step daughters
Falessia Vinson (Tommie) and Alfreda Shaw; siblings William Maxwell, Beatrice
Turk, Betty Witherspoon, Melvin Myers Jr., Robert Myers, Charlie Nevels, Thomas
Dowdell, Jimmy Myers, and Archie Givner; eleven grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren, friend and confidante Annie Mae Haynes; and a host of
nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A service honoring Juanita’s life will be held at Miller Funeral Home, 608 Saint Phillip Street,
Selma, Alabama, at 11am on Saturday June 12th, 2021.
