Joseph Eliot Merritt, Sr.Holt, MIJoseph (Joe) Eliot Merritt, Sr. passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2017 at the age of 73. Joe was born on May 29, 1944 in Lansing, MI the son of Donald and Grace (Dyer) Merritt. After graduating Webberville High School, Joe enlisted in the
United States Navy and was stationed in Vietnam. After serving his country, Joe worked for United Parcel Service (UPS) for 18 years. Joe left UPS and pursued his dream as a farmer in Shiawassee County for 10 years. During this time, a business opportunity opened and Joe bought and operated "Joe's Truck Stop and Restaurant" in Perry, retiring after 15 successful years in 2000. Not accepting retirement, Joe started working for Dean Trailways where he was able to drive his beloved Michigan State Spartans to many away games. His greatest passion in life, besides his love for his wife, children and grandchildren, was racing stock cars. Joe started racing in 1984 at Spartan Speedway winning multiple track championship as "Smokin Joe Merritt" #27. He retired from racing after 13 years. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; sister and two brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Lori (Watson) Merritt; children, Steve (Trish) Diamond of Ramona, CA, Robert (Natasha) Merritt of Haslett, Da'Neese (Ron) Wells of Holt, Joseph Jr. (Kelly) Merritt of Mason, Mandi (Robert) Woodward of Lansing, Tim (Samantha Weaver) Merritt of Holt and 12 grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be held, Thursday, August 24, 2017, 10:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Holt, with Pastor Jerry Mitchell and Rev. Andrew Polmerville concelebrating. The family will receive friends and family Wednesday, August 23, 2017, from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the church. All are welcome. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service.
