Joseph Edward SmithPort Hueneme Joseph Edward Smith was born on March 12, 1945, to the late Wilford Norwood and Bessie (Simmons) Norwood of North Chicago, IL. Joseph was called home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 21, 2017, at home surrounded by Love ones. He was a force of nature with a kind and beautiful soul with many passions. He was a gallant fighter and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Joseph is a graduate of the class of 1963, Waukegan (West) High School, Waukegan, IL. He and his family moved to California in 1985 for his wife to pursue her career with the Naval Facilities Engineer Command (NAVFAC). He went on to work for the Federal government at the Naval Engineering Command, Naval Base (Ventura County), Port Hueneme, CA.Joseph rededicated his life to Christ in early 2001, jointed and faithfully served at Morning Star Church of God in Christ (COGIC), Oxnard, CA, Elder Odell Rimmer, pastor. He had strong beliefs and expressed them often which caused disagreements and sometimes hurt feelings. So he would be on his way to another church for a minute but ALWAYS returned to Morning Star, his home.Joseph was affectionately known as Dad, Joe, Papa Joe, Broadway, Uncle and Brother Smith. Joseph enjoyed all aspects of sports and NEVER tired fo giving his opinion on any subject pertaining to sports. Okay, giving his opinion on ANY subject. He helped coach his son's basketball summer league including transporting team members to out-of-town games. He cared about every young man on that team beyond the basketball court. Joseph was very much a people person who would always do whatever was required to encourage those around him.Our loyal and faithful brother, Joseph Edward Smith, is now an angel in the paradise with his parents, Wilford and Bessie Norwood. He was preceded in death by his great - grandparents, Gus and Rosie Davis, Aunt Josephine Martin, Janie and Dorothy Martin, Cousin Smalley, other family members. He is survived by his wife Charlesetta (Mollie) Smith; three sons: Joseph (Michael, Tinasia, Aaron, Jo'Lisa) Sanders, Damien (Roc) (Rebecca) Smith, Quentin (Q.J.) Hardy; young sisters: Rosemary (Lewis) Duty of Wisconsin and Judy N. White of Illinois, many cousins, nieces, and nephew. Joseph's funeral services will be held at 10 O'clock a.m., August 5, 2017, at Morning Star COGIC, 425 N. Harrison, Oxnard, CA.
