Dr. Joseph H. CarterYorkDuring his career at York Hospital Dr. Carter held and welcomed thousands of babies into the world, and so it is with profound sadness that we report the passing of Dr. Joseph Hankinson Carter Jr. who died on October 19, 2017 following a ten-month battle with squamous cell carcinoma.Dr. Carter was born on August 27, 1932 in Asbury Park, NJ. Korean war. Dr. Carter graduated, and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, at Hahnemann Medical School. In 1970 he and Dr. G. Bradford Myers opened a private practice in York. The practice flourished with the addition of Drs. Kousen, Douglass, Russo and Grim, until 1996 when it became part of Wellspan Health. Dr. Carter retired from private practice in 1998. Dr. Carter served as the Medical Director for Planned Parenthood for 25 years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the AMA. Dr. Carter also served as a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church, the President of the Valley View Elementary PTO, and a 4-H Ringmaster and Old Rose Tree Pony Club volunteer for many years. Most recently, he worked as an attending physician at Wellspan OB/GYN clinic from 1999-2017 where he dedicated his time to teaching residents and seeing patients, something he loved best.A compassionate physician, Dr. Carter was a staunch advocate for women's reproductive rights. He loved to travel but always found himself back on Long Beach Island for a few weeks in the summer where he listened to the waves and read spy novels. He loved going fast in cars with big engines. He enjoyed wildlife photography and collecting African masks. A passionate gourmand, Dr. Carter adored tasting, sharing, and buying wine especially with his good friends, Bill and Marge Lampe.
