John Wayne Smith, of Granite City, Illinois passed away October 14th, 2024, at the age of 73. He was born to Houston and Ruby (Brady) Lowry on April 14th, 1951, in Bloomington, Illinois.

He married the love of his life, Rose Fleming on July 13th, 1973, in Belleville Illinois, celebrating 53 years of love and life together.

John was preceded in death by his father, Houston Lowry and brother Larry Lowry.

John is survived by his mother Ruby Lowry, Siblings: Rodger (Sharon) Lowry, Robin (Donald) Lowry-Stapleton, Retha Lowry, Russel (Jill) Lowry, Houston (Shirley) Lowry. Wife Rose Smith, Children: Lisa Smith, Nikki (Corey) Hughes, Katrina (Asa) Smith-Scarborough, Zac (Courtney) Smith, Grandchildren: Brandon (Skylar), Katie, Savannah, Tressa, Karlie, Mason, Avery, Noah, Levi, and Silas, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

John was a chef for many years. He volunteered many hours with The Salvation Army, working with the bell ringing program, being a leader of the boys’ club as well as helping with disaster work, providing meals. John worked and volunteered wherever needed, giving all of his time for the care of others. He was dearly loved by many and made lasting relationships with people in the community as well as partners. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and enjoyed music of all kinds.

On behalf of John his family would like to thank some of the staff from Evercare Nursing Home that loved, cared and poured life into John during his time there. A special thanks goes to the nurses: Kelly, Ronda, Haley and Erin, CNA’s: Lamont, Linda, Sydney and Steven and to the other staff Paulette, Bev, Maya, Anna, Tina, Raymond and Charles for making John always feel loved and acknowledged. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
