John Robert Slayton, born on April 19, 1949, in McAlester Oklahoma, passed away on April 20, 2025. He was the first born son of Bobby John Slayton and Myrl Francis White.

John is survived by his children: Heather Williams (spouse Scott Williams), Hebhra Slayton, Megan Abrams (spouse Jon Abrams), Mason Walker (spouse Ryan Walker), Jake Slayton (spouse Kathryn Slayton), Mack Slayton, Ike Slayton, and Hank Slayton. Sadly, one of his children, Heath Slayton, predeceased him.

He leaves behind a legacy of 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

John attended South High in Wichita, KS, graduating in 1967, before continuing his studies at Friends University. He was actively involved in sports, particularly football. In the early 80’s, he was member of The Tulsa Mustangs semi pro football team. In 1993, he won the Powerlifting State Championship for his age group. He was security for a lot of musical artists and sporting events in Tulsa. He once refused to let Reba McEntire into her own dressing room because she had no make-up on and her hair in rollers, he didn’t recognize her.

John could be a pistol but he was really a big teddy bear. He’d give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. He was a very loyal friend.

Children absolutely adored him. He made sure he always had candy & pop in his room at the nursing home in case little ones would come to visit. He would sometimes take them on rides in his wheelchair and they called him “grumpy”. They would also color pictures for him to hang in his room. John will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A special thank you to Inola Nursing Center and Compassus Hospice for the love and care you gave him in the 3 years he was a resident.
