Joan RooneyWest Yarmouth, MA and Naples, FLJoan Fahey Melanson Rooney, of West Yarmouth, MA and Naples, FL, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2016. Joan was born on September 6, 1931 in Cambridge, MA, the only child of Irma Louise Morrison and William Thomas Fahey. She grew up in Waltham, MA and graduated from Waltham High School in 1949. Joan worked in administrative positions until she married Herbert J. Melanson Jr. They raised three children, Deborah, Nancy, and Herbert III in Natick, MA. While in Natick she was President of the Natick Jr. Woman's Club and was active in the community. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert. In 1973 she was reunited with Frank Rooney who was a dear family friend who was also widowed. They were married and she became the mother of Thomas, Margaret, Timothy, and Daniel. Together with her children they started their new life together. They lived in Waltham and spent their summers on Cape Cod in West Yarmouth. Together they joined the Bass River Golf Course and enjoyed many friendships there. She became President of the Bass River Niners in 2002. Upon retirement they wintered in Naples, FL and had many wonderful years golfing at the Glades Country Club. She also enjoyed bocce and bridge with her friends in Naples. Joan was predeceased by children Deborah and Timothy, and husband Frank in 2007. She leaves behind her children, Nancy Wheeler and her husband Peter of Southborough, Herbert Melanson and his wife Cynthia of Leicester, Thomas Rooney and his wife Kathleen of Norwood, Margaret Malkoski and her husband Vincent of Marion, Dan Rooney and his wife Susan of Andover. Loving grandchildren: Christine Clancy, Timothy Langevin, Lauren Beausoleil, David Wheeler, Kimberly Malkoski, Amy Malkoski, Sean Melanson, Kerrin Strong, Amanda Rooney, Emily Rooney, Sadie Rooney, and Jack Rooney, great-grandchildren: Zachary Langevin, Brooke Clancy, Addison Clancy, and Greyden Beausoleil. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2016 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Morris, O'Connor & Blute Funeral Home (
