Joan (Boykin) Harper, 82, of Victorville, California, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, surrounded by love and the comforting presence of her family. Joan’s life was a testament to kindness, grace, and an unwavering devotion to those she cherished. Her gentle spirit, her readiness to lend a helping hand, and her infectious joy for life leave an indelible legacy among all who knew her.
Born on August 19, 1942, in D’Lo, Mississippi, Joan was the beloved daughter of Julius (Jule) Boykin and Mary Christine Anderson Boykin Hyman, and the cherished granddaughter of Jacob Samuel Anderson and Emma (Hall Holyfield) Anderson. From an early age, Joan dedicated her life to Christ as a member of St. Mary’s Baptist Church, a foundation of faith that guided her throughout her journey.
Joan was a proud graduate of Harper Vocational High School in Mendenhall, Mississippi, and attended Alcorn College before beginning a new chapter in California. She furthered her education at El Camino College, ultimately building an extraordinary 32-year career at Xerox. Known for her professionalism, kindness, and selflessness, Joan made lasting friendships and left a legacy of excellence that inspired all who worked alongside her.
Joan found love and lifelong companionship with her partner, Roger Smith. Together, they created a life filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering support. As a mother, Joan’s heart overflowed with love for her adopted children, Nathaniel Boykin Jr. (spouse Alana J. Boykin) and Joanna Boykin. Her joy only deepened with her cherished grandchildren, Izaiah Montgomery, Nathaniel Boykin III, and Maia Helen Boykin, who were the light of her life.
Joan’s family was her anchor, and she shared a profound bond with her surviving siblings Peggy Fryar, Dorothy Jean Crowder, Clara Jean Johnson, and Nathaniel Boykin Sr. She is now reunited in eternal peace with her siblings Willie Smith Jr., James Monroe Smith, Charles Edward Smith, Mary Helen Adams, and JoeNathan Boykin, whose memories she always held dear.
A woman of creativity and deep appreciation for life’s beauty, Joan expressed her passions through crocheting, collecting landscape paintings, and curating her treasured clocks. Her home, adorned with warmth and love, was a sanctuary where all who entered felt welcomed and cherished. Joan’s wisdom, compassion, and unwavering faith inspired everyone who crossed her path.
