Mrs. Jean Bond Ryan 1927-2017 St. Martin Community Mrs. Jean Lavelle Bond Ryan of the St. Martin Community passed away at the age of 89 on Thursday, March 9, 2017. Jean was born on April 30, 1927 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Everett Bond and Lula Etta Flurry Bond; step-father, Alfred Roosevelt Havens; husband, Henry Ryan; step-daughter, Betty Lou Callegari; and sisters, Annie Ruth Bond Reed and Barbara Havens Bell. She is survived by sisters, Billie Dee (Milton) Havens Cox and Betty (Joe) Havens Roberts; step-daughters, Nancy Ryan Letort and Theresa Ryan Simmons; step son-in-law, Johnnie Callegari; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jean resided most of her youth on John's Bayou in Vancleave, Mississippi and attended 12 years of schooling in Jackson County. She graduated from Vancleave High School. After graduating, she moved to New Orleans with her older sister and then to Ashville, North Carolina with her younger sister. While in Ashville, she attended nursing school becoming a registered nurse and worked in that profession for the next 33 years. Jean worked in Pediatrics in Asheville, then at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Florida, until returning to Mississippi and completing her career with her retirement from Ocean Springs Hospital in 1983. Jean loved all animals especially cats. She was a supporter of the Jackson County Animal Shelter. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed eating out and visiting with hospitalized friends. Jean was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi and participated with the Thursday morning Bible Study group. She was also a member of the St. Martin Lyon's Auxiliary. The family would sincerely like to thank the staff at the Greenbriar Nursing Center in D'Iberville for the love, care and compassion offered to Jean during her residency at the facility. The staff grew to become Jean's extended family as many affectionately called her "Jean Bean" which always put a smile on her face. Services will be held at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 11am. Friends are invited to visit one hour prior.
