HOWE — Janis Kay Penick, 74, of Howe, Indiana, died Tuesday, August 18, 2015, at her home on Cedar Lake after a short illness. Janis was born on April 5, 1941, in Sturgis, Michigan, to the union of Maynard and Kathleen (Scott) Haskins. On June 7, 1959, in Ontario, Indiana, she married her first and only love, Robert Lee Penick. Over the next 56 years, they raised each other and four children. Together Janis and Bob enjoyed over 51 years at Cedar Lake, many adventures in camping, boating, travel, and their retirement winters in Leesburg, Florida. Janis was a gifted cook, sewer, and lover of animals, good mystery novels, and playing games with family and friends. She was a sewer for many years at both Shadow Interiors and Dometic Corporation. She attended Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in LaGrange, Indiana. Surviving are her husband, Robert L. Penick Sr. of Howe, Indiana; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori A. and Michael Deal of Wolcottville, Indiana; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert Lee Jr. and Sabrina Penick of Topeka, Indiana, Rodney A. Penick of South Bend, Indiana, and Brian S. and Larissa Penick of Howe, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Scott and Evelyn Deal of Kendallville, Indiana, Kyle Penick of Wolcottville, Indiana, Korey Penick of Wolcottville, Indiana, Madison Penick of Topeka, Indiana, Koty Penick of Howe, Indiana, Cole Penick of Howe, Indiana, Shelby Penick of Howe, Indiana, and Jalayna Kay Penick of Howe, Indiana; and her in-laws that she held as her dearest friends, Lyn Haskins of Columbia City, Indiana, Don and Barb Penick of Sturgis, Michigan, Donna Sutton of Sturgis, Michigan, and Bruce and Maddy Bornmann of LaGrange, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maynard and Kathleen Haskins; her stepmother, June Haskins, a brother, Gene Maynard Haskins; a sister-in-law, Nancy Penick; and a brother-in-law, Larry Sutton. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 797 N. Detroit St., LaGrange, Indiana, with the Rev. Justin Smoot officiating. A memorial visitation will take place on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the service time at 2 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to either Parkview Home Health and Hospice or ARK Animal Rescue.
