James Weldon Whitlock Sr.San AngeloJames Weldon Whitlock Sr., 76, was called home on Nov. 12, 2016, at his residence surrounded by his family and friends.He was born on July 3, 1940 in Paint Rock, Texas, to Lee Roy Whitlock and Eunice Joiner Whitlock. He attended Paint Rock High School and played six-man football for the Paint Rock Indians. He joined the United States
Army on Feb. 18, 1958, and was stationed in Alaska.He met the love of his life, Gracie B. Barnes, and made her his wife on Feb. 1, 1964. James retired from the Texas Department of Transportation after 27 years of service as a heavy equipment mechanic and shop foreman. He was a freemason and a founding member of the Lone Star Riders Club. He loved hunting and fishing in Texas, New Mexico and Mexico and participated in many fishing tournaments in the Concho Bass Club.James began playing golf when his two youngest sons were in high school and was an avid golfer. He was a loyal and trusted friend and a very loving husband, father and grandfather.James is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Gracie B. Whitlock of San Angelo; daughter, Beverly Watkins of Everman, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Ricky Williford of San Angelo; son Richard Whitlock of Leaky, Texas; son and daughter-in-law Curtis and Karen Whitlock of San Angelo; son James Whitlock Jr. of San Angelo; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include brothers, Allan Whitlock and Joe Whitlock from San Angelo and Don Whitlock of Brownwood, Texas; sisters Helen Pope and Judy Whitley of Brownwood, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.Pallbearers will be Nate Magars, Brian Magars, Weldon Williford, Gordon Emmons, Danny G. Porter, and Richard Whitlock Jr.He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy and Eunice Whitlock; brother, Charles Whitlock; and sister Betty Townsend.Visitation was Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Service is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Paint Rock Cemetery.
