James Jarboe Obituary

Feb 19, 1928 - Jan 13, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
JARBOE, James F.James F. Jarboe passed away at home in Duarte, California on November 13, 2016.Jim was born on February 19, 1928 to Lindsay and Florence Jarboe in San Rafael, California. He and his younger sister, Joan, grew up among their large family at Mme. Mazet's French Laundry which they owned and operated. Jim lost his father at the tender age of 15, and was issued an emergency driver's license. He often bragged, even in his 80s, that he had never gotten a ticket.Jim had several interesting jobs, working in the shop at the Marin Independent Journal newspaper in his teen years, then as a film projectionist at Marin County theaters. He became an accomplished saxophone player, and during college, he played both tenor and alto saxophone. After a bout with typhoid fever, which prevented him from serving his country during World War II, he was drafted for the Korean War. He became a combat photographer in the Third Infantry Division of the U.S. Army.Upon his return to the states, he returned to working as a projectionist and photographer. A friend referred Jim to a job in Pasadena with Hycon, an aerospace company, that eventually became McDonnell Douglas and then Boeing. Jim stayed with the company for his entire career. There he met his wife, Lydia, where they were on the company bowling team, went to Dodger games and fell in love. They had two children, Claire and Daniel, and poured their love and attention into them, always being highly involved in the PTA, and attending every recital and soccer game.Jim was a doting grandfather. The grandchildren will always remember "Grandpa Shutterbug" capturing every happy occasion of their lives on film.Once retired, Jim and Lydia traveled across the country to attend Korean War veterans' reunions, and were honored to visit South Korea. Jim always marveled that in a brief, 50-year period, the South Koreans had rebuilt a country that was decimated by the war. Through his involvement with the O.P. Harry Survivor's Association, he was honored to be included in a film entitled "Hold at All Costs; Korea: The Battle of Outpost Harry."Jim was the best father and grandfather, and we will miss him forever. He is survived by his wife, Lydia, his children, Clair Vorhis (Robert) and Daniel (Emily), his grandchildren, Sarah Jo, Michael and EJ, and his sister, Joan Willis. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law, Chuck Willis. His funeral was held on November 19, 2016. He will be laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery at a future date. The family would like to thank the caregivers with Community Care Hospice of Glendora, who lovingly cared for our dad in the last days of his life.
