James "Curtis" Doyal, 75, of Dark Canyon Rd, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2017 at University Medical Center in Lubbock, TX. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2017 at the West Funeral Home Chapel with Thad Phipps and Jesse Bassett officiating. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery (new section). Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. on Sunday at West Funeral Home. James Curtis Doyal was born on March 24, 1942 in Portales, NM to James Haskell Doyal and Nora Beatrice (Robertson) Doyal. He is survived by his wife Lisa Doyal of the family ranch and daughter Shelly A. Brockman, her husband Clint and granddaughter Brittni of Tucumcari, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Beatrice and son James "Jimmy" Von Doyal. Curtis graduated from Portales High School in 1960 and Texas Tech University in 1966 with a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Nutrition and Genetics. Most of his early career was in the field of Agriculture Finance having worked 13 years with USDA FSA as a Loan Workout Specialist. After leaving FSA in 1978 he continued to help farmers and ranchers in SE NM by providing loan packaging services and consulting for many years. During the Teton Dam disaster he was the recipient of a Presidential Accommodation for mitigation of flood damage loss claims for the producers in the area. In 1980 Curtis and his wife began ranching West of Carlsbad, which remained his passion until his death. His entire life he loved all aspects of agriculture and advocated tirelessly for the industry. He loved working with kids and always had time to share his knowledge and inspire young minds to achieve success in whatever dreams they had. Curtis will be dearly missed by so many.
