James C. Shipman, 72 of Marysville, WA left us on October 31, 2013. Jim was born on August 7, 1941 in Toledo, Washington. He is survived by his wife, Janice Shipman; daughter, Angie; and son, James; grandchildren, Katherine, Davis and Lily; brothers, Calvin and Conrad; and numerous nephews, nieces and friends. Jim grew up on the south hill of Puyallup at the family farm, among friends and family. After his freshman year of high school his family moved to a 160 acre farm at Alfa Prairie near Onalaska, Washington. He attended high school in Onalaska where he met the love of his life, Janice Davis. After high school he served in the United States Navy before coming home to marry Jan. Jim and Jan were married for 52 wonderful years. In 1963 they moved to California where Jim attended Mortuary Science school. They moved back to first Longview, where he completed a degree at Lower Columbia College, and then Long Beach Washington. Angie and James were born during their time in Long Beach. While at Long Beach Jim served on the local school board and as a volunteer firefighter. In 1973 Jim and Jan purchased Schaefer Funeral Home in Marysville, Washington, which became Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home. Jim served the grieving families of Marysville for the rest of his life. He had a special love for the Tulalip Tribes, and caring for their families. He always worked hard to make sure everyone was taken care of and brought deep compassion and professionalism to his position. In 1986/87, he was the President of the Washington State Funeral Director's Association. Jim also was significantly involved in the community. He served as a volunteer fireman and Captain with the Marysville Fire Department for many years. He served on the Everett Community College Board and was involved in Marysville Lions, the Crystal Masonic Lodge and many other local organizations. In 1976 he was elected to the Washington State Senate, but lost the election by a handful of votes on recall. Jim and Jan were members of the Marysville United Methodist Church since 1973. In recent years, he has continued his community activities with involvement in the Marysville Historical Society, the Stillaguamish Senior Center, and as a historian at the Evergreen Cemetery. Jim worked hard at Evergreen to locate information about civil war veterans. Jim was a wonderful and loving husband, father, uncle, and friend. He possessed a delightful sense of humor. He always took time to share his love of history and the world. His service to the community, particularly to thousands of grieving families, will be forever remembered. Funeral services are arranged by Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home. Visitation will occur at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home, 804 State Ave, Marysville Washington from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2013. A memorial service will be held at Marysville United Methodist Church, 5600 64th St. N.E. Marysville Washington at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2013. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Everett Washington. Memorials may be made to Providence Hospice & Home Care Foundation, 2731 Wetmore Ave. #500, Everett, WA 98201; the Marysville United Methodist Church or to the . Arrangements entrusted to Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home.
