Irene Beatrice Chamberlin, of East Tawas, formerly of Birmingham, passed away peacefully under the loving care of her family at home on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, age 85. Irene was born on Oct. 10, 1927 in Dearborn, to Antoine and Helen (Martin) Roy. After high school graduation, Irene furthered her education by earning her undergraduate degree at Oakland University and continued to earn a master's degree from Wayne State University concentrating in library study. She was employed by Troy Union Elementary School as a teacher and librarian, retiring after 20 years of faithful service in 1986. Irene married her best friend, Robert Louis Chamberlin, on June 12, 1948 at the St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Saginaw. Together, they celebrated 64 beautiful years of marriage. Those who knew and loved Irene will always remember how she truly had a passion for reading, working on stain glass projects, knitting, collecting beach glass and baking delicious treats for everyone to enjoy. She was involved in a couple knitting groups both in Tawas City and Vero Beach, Fla. where she would enjoy to knit little hats for new born babies. Irene will truly be missed by all who had the honor to know her. She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert L. Chamberlin of East Tawas; five children, Roy Robert Chamberlin of Tucson, Ariz., Cynthia Marie Phillips of Granite Bay, Calif., Carol Anne Schmaltz of Natick, Mass., Bob Louis Chamberlin of Clawson and Dessie Jane Hughes of Traverse City; six grandchildren, John Michael Phillips, Jesse Reed Phillips, Dustin Schmaltz, Estee Schmaltz, Melissa Lee Hughes and McCaslin Roy Hughes; two great grandchildren, Carter Marie Phillips and Kelsey Lauren Phillips; two sisters; Therese (Bob) Light of East Tawas and Rita Roy Phinney of Hampstead, N.C.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life and memorial service was held on Sunday, Jan. 20 at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City with Deacon Michael Sullivan officiating.
