Passed away on July 24, 2017 in Naples, Fl.A memorial service and interment will be held in the Chapel at North Naples United Methodist Church n 6000 Goodlette Road Naples, Fl. 34109 on August 5, 2017 at 11am. Following the service a reception will be held in the church hall.Dr. Gates was born on August 19, 1933 in Washington, D.C. He grew up there and in Annapolis, MD where he spent his summers.After high school, He attended Duke University and graduated in the three years Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended George Washington University Medical School, as did his father. He graduated with honors and was inducted into the Obstetrics and Gynecology Honor Society. After a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, he spent two years on the Navaho reservation in New Mexico delivering Navaho babies. After this he was in private practice in McLean, Va. And then Norfolk, Va. During this time he became a member of Mensa.During this time Dr. Gates directed a church choir for many years and also learned to fly. He achieved the rating of commercial pilot, instrument pilot and instructor. He spent many hours instructing pilots getting their license. In 1980 Dr. Gates turned to academic medicine and became a member of the faculty at the City of Faith. He became the head of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served as a consultant at the National Guard Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and was the Associate Medical Director at the V.A. Hospital in Shreveport, La. dealing with women's health care. He was also on the faculty at East Carolina School of Medicine.Dr. Gates moved to Emerald Isle, NC. upon his retirement and spent a great deal of time in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. In 2012 Dr. Gates moved to Naples, Fl. He is survived by his wife, Diane. They shared 61 years of Marriage and had three children Dr. Herbert Stelwyn Gates III, of Naples, Fl., Susan Lynne Gates Taylor of Alma, Ar., and Robert Paul Gates, who preceded him in death. They had six grandchildren, Jennell Diane Gates, Herbert Stelwyn Gates, IV, Lawren Taylor-Tabor, Allison Dee Taylor , Hunter Robert Taylor and Michael Gates Taylor, and a great granddaughter Emma Lynne TaborIn lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund at North Naples United Methodist Church or St. Matthews House Naples, Fl.
