HAROLD B. MIKELS, 90 FREEPORT - Harold B. Mikels, 90, of Freeport, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014. Harold was born on June 7, 1923, in Moulton, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Nanna (Swarts) Mikels. Harold married Dolores Knight in El Paso, Texas on March 24, 1945. Harold served for the U.S. Army in World War II, in the Aleutian Campaign. He worked at Commonwealth Edison for 39 years. Harold was a member of First Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and loved being in the outdoors. For over 50 years Harold fished in Canada. Surviving are wife, Dolores Mikels of Freeport; son, Barry (Caroline) Mikels of Rockford, IL; two grandchildren, Amy (David) Timonen of Palatine and Joel Mikels of Olney, IL; and three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Amanda, and Zachary. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 24, 2014, at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Pastor Steve Rios will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, also at Burke Tubbs. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Cemetery in Sterling. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for F.H.N.
