KINSTON - Graham W. Mallard, 75, of Kinston passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2012. He was born on March 15, 1937, to the late Rom Warden Mallard and Annie Banks Mallard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Dr. W. Burkett Raper. Mr. Mallard was a member of Westminster United Methodist Church in Kinston. He was a Master Mason and a past Master of Zion Lodge No. 81 in Trenton; was a member of numerous educational organizations; and was a retired assistance principal at Kinston High School. He graduated from East Carolina Teachers College with a bachelor's degree; earned his master's degree from East Carolina University; and later earned his principal's certification from East Carolina University. Married for 58 years, he came to Kinston as a young industrial education instructor at Grainger High School. A strong advocate of education, he spent his more than 40 year career in the Lenoir County Public School System. He served in many roles in the school system over the years. Through the years he touched many lives. As coordinator of the county school bus routes, he supervised the county school student bus drivers. He loved all his students, but he especially loved "his bus drivers." He loved his community and was considered by all as a kind and gentle spirit with a love of animals, love of family, and love of athletics, especially Kinston High, East Carolina University, and Duke University. He is survived by his wife, Jean Moore Mallard of the home; daughter Jeanne Mallard Kennedy and husband Roger, of La Grange; two sisters, Rose Mallard Raper of Mount Olive and Agnes Faye Phillips and husband Horace, of Trenton; two grandchildren, Amanda Kennedy of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Matthew Kennedy of Blacksburg, Va.; a great-grandson, Austin Kennedy; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2012, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home with the Reverend Gary Bailey and the Reverend T. R. Miller officiating. The family will receive friends following the funeral service. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
