Gerald A. Mayer, age 84, of St. Clair Shores and formerly of Oscoda, died on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 in Mt. Clemens. He was born on May 27, 1928 in Detroit to the late Alfred and Laura Mayer (nee Knisly). Gerald retired as a police sergeant after 25 years of service in the Detroit Police Department. He also served in the Merchant Marines and the United States Army. Gerald was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Rochester Hills, a former member of Oscoda Trinity Lutheran Church, Oscoda Yacht Club, American Legion and the Detroit Police Officers Association. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Gerald is survived by his son, Gerald "Jerry" R. (Michelle) Mayer of St. Clair Shores; daughter, Janette (Paul) Stewart of Troy; and four grandchildren, Andrew Gerald, Michael Robert, Steven Paul and David Glenn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Ruth Mayer, in 1996; and three sisters; Mitzie, Adella and Ruthann. The family will receive friends on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Oscoda. Interment will follow in Oscoda Pinecrest Cemetery.
