George Bond Barr, a loving husband, a loving father, devoted grandfather, and Honorable U.S. Navy Veteran, passed away on January 7, 2024, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. George was born in Tarrytown, New York on May 19, 1931. His Daughter Ellen was born the same date on May 19, 1958. He was the son of immigrants from Scotland, Robert Barr and Jean Barr. His Dad served in the UK Army in India during WWI. After the war, George’s parents emigrated to the United States to start their family. George’s siblings had all predeceased him, sister Jean, and brothers Robert, “Bob”, and John “Jack”. During WWII, George’s mom was a “Rosie the Riveter” in Tarrytown, New York, as his dad was assisting with the Alaskan Highway. George’s life was one of dedication, service, and love of family, and proud of his Scottish Heritage.
George served his Country with pride and Honor in the United States Navy. He left a legacy of bravery and commitment to his fellow countrymen. He was a “Tin Can Sailor” deployed on a Destroyer, USS Van Valkenburgh, DD656, Korea 1951-1954. His selfless service exemplified his strong sense of duty, a trait that carried through to private life. He volunteered at many positions: Scout Leader; volunteer for numerous sport teams; civic organizations; Volunteer Fireman for the Village of Ossining, New York; Venice, Florida VFW Commander, and District Commander; American Legion Volunteer; Venice High School Booster Club Member; and served on the Venice Housing Authority which bestowed the honor of having the Community Center named in his honor.
George leaves behind his widowed wife, Jane Barr. Their love story is one of commitment, true love, and understanding for each other. He and Jane resided in Venice, FL for well over 30 years together before relocating to Fort Lauderdale.
George was the loving and proud father of three children, Ellen Smith (spouse Frank), Robert, “Bob” Barr, (USCG retired CWO4) predeceased, loving daughter-in-law Jeanne, and Bruce Barr (spouse Irma). His guidance, support, and unwavering love shaped their lives and created a bond that will endure beyond his passing.
George’s legacy also extends to his cherished grandchildren, who meant the world to him. Dylan Barr, Wesley Barr, Tyler Barr, Craig Barr, Grace Barr, Katie Smith, Nick Smith, and Tori Smith will forever carry the lessons, values, and love instilled by their grandfather. George also leaves behind his beloved great grandchildren, Shea Bonner, Melody Bonner, and Ethan Barr.
A man of strong character and integrity, George Barr touched the lives around him with kindness and warmth. His memory will live on in the hearts who had the privilege of knowing him.
