Gary Allen ShaverMankato07-05-1938 to 09-23-2017Gary Allen Shaver, 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 23, 2017. He was born on July 5, 1938 in Mankato, Minnesota. Gary was the son of Victor and Emma (Carlson) Shaver. He graduated from St. Clair High School in 1956, and Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis in 1960, earning a degree in Industrial Electronics. Throughout his life he lived in a variety of places, such as St.Clair, Minneapolis, St.Cloud, Ely, Bemidji, MN, and has resided in Superior, WI for the past 30 years. Gary was self-employed for most of his life and enjoyed the challenge of starting businesses including a glass company, auto service station, and bulk oil dealership. Gary also worked as a realtor, and truck driver. While driving semi for Halvor Lines, he traveled throughout the country, entertaining family and friends with stories of his experiences. He later became a trainer for new drivers with Halvor Lines. Gary loved to fish, especially favoring Lake of the Woods, and spent many hours four wheeling, snowmobiling, and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was an exceptional and patient teacher with his children and grandchildren, it gave him great joy to teach them to drive/handle motorized vehicles and it gave his family lifelong skills that they will never forget. Gary had a passion for flying and being a pilot. He earned his license in his late teens and float plane rating in September 1969. He enjoyed taking his family on plane adventures. Gary was a member of the Masons, Scottish Rite, and a very active Shriner for most of his life.Gary survived by his children, twin daughters Laurie (Eugene) Sublett and Linda (Andrew) Orfield, son Brian (Laura) Shaver, grandchildren Zachary (Miranda), Alexandra, Jessica, Lyndsey, and Christian, step-grandchildren Tanya(Brent) and Christopher, and great grandchildren Zane, Omar, Brenton Jr, and Brevon. Sister Allene (Guenther) Moesler, brothers Craig (Pat)Shaver, Kevin Shaver, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He preceded in death by two sons and his parents.Visitation will be held from 4 to 5 pm on October 7th, followed by a Masonic funeral service at 5 pm at the Downs Funeral Home, 1617 19th Street, Superior, WI.
