Gary E. Warwick, Sr.Gary Warwick, Sr. passed away quietly on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the age of 73. He was born on July 17, 1944 in Port Huron to Eloise Ferrol and the late Amos F. Warwick. He married Carol R. Pickelhaupt in 1963, shortly after graduating from from Port Huron High School in 1962. He went on to attend St Clair County Community College then completed the Apprenticeship program of the Detroit Council of Carpenters from which he retired in 1997. His lengthy career in the construction industry included projects at the Ford Proving Grounds, Pontiac Silverdome, and Blue Water Bridge Expansion and if you've ever driven the spiral drive to the top of COBO Hall - he built that too. Gary passed his construction skills to his sons which, resulted in Gary Jr's, lengthy career building Detroit's infrastructure and Chad's career building Detroit Public Schools. Gary owned and operated Warwick Mask and Equipment Hockey shop. In 1969 he began making a new invention, the fiberglass goalie mask, to protect his face from the damage caused by hockey puck shots. By the 1990's his creations have been worn by NHL Stanley Cup goalies, Olympic Gold Medalists and NCAA Hobey Baker Award winners. To this day, his goalie masks are considered to be the benchmark in design, performance and durability. As a global traveler, his passions included fly fishing, boating, architecture and fine dining. There wasn't a day that his contagious smile or laugh wouldn't brighten another person's day. His love of sports and community made his skate sharpening business a hub for conversations and stories during the hockey season. Gary is survived by his wife; Carol, sons; Chad and Gary Jr., daughter in-law; Shelly and granddaughters; Karley, Krista and Harlow. He was very close to his niece Elizabeth and her husband Rodney and their son, Hunter as well as nephew; Richard and his wife Tracy. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. at
Smith Family Funeral Home - North, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, visiting beginning at church at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to Community Foundation of St. Clair County (a fund will be set up for local net minders).
