Fredrick Milo BishopAthensFredrick Milo Bishop, 87, of Athens, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence in Battle Creek.A celebration of Fred's life will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation, located 3 miles east of M-66 on M-60, in Union City. Pastor David Mackaluso of the Wakeshma Community Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Burr Oak Cemetery in Athens. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 31, 2017 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Lighthouse in Union City and again on Tuesday, just prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 A.M., also at the Lighthouse.Fred was born on March 26, 1930 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Kellogg and Merna (Snyder) Bishop. He and his family moved to the Athens area when Fred was just 8 years old. He graduated from Athens High School in 1948 and married his sweetheart, JoAnn Swartz, on December 28 that same year in Battle Creek. The couple made their home in Athens where they raised their four children. Fred worked for Eaton's in Battle Creek for about 12 years before he got in to Kellogg's. He served for 31 years at the cereal company before retiring. Fred and JoAnn were married for 65 wonderful years before she died in 2015.Fred was a great father to his children. He helped coach Little League baseball in Athens, helped start the group known as the Athens Athletic Boosters and was a member of the Kellogg's 25 Year Club. He was an outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and trapping. He enjoyed golfing and absolutely loved to go sailing with Ray Pontoni and his crew. He was very proud of his grandchildren and told them so often. He was known for his witty comments and dry sense of humor. He will be missed many who knew and loved him.Mr. Bishop is survived by his children, Deborah Atkinson of Battle Creek, Pamela (Lowell) Howington, Doug (Jimi) Bishop, and Jody (Tim) Leslie, all of Athens, his sisters Barbara Danilowicz of Wilmington NC, Mary Wesner of Kalamazoo and Carol Bishop of Denver, CO, his sister-in-law Fern Bishop of Battle Creek, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and his caregivers Linda Noel & Vicki Ingersoll.In addition to his wife, Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers John and Bruce Bishop and his son-in-law Ron Atkinson in 2016.Memorial contributions may be directed to the Athens Area Community Foundation for the "Les Swartz Memorial Scholarship."
