Frank G. Christensen RACINE – Frank G. Christensen, 89, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – All Saints due to complications following hip surgery and a heart attack. He was a lifelong resident of Racine, born on September 13, 1923 to Alfred and Mabel (nee: Melik) Christensen. On June 1, 1946, at Atonement Lutheran Church he was united in marriage to Anne Wynstra, who preceded him in death on December 23, 1994. Along with his wife Anne, they owned and operated Christensen Draperies and Bath Shop until their retirement in 1984. Frank was an avid golfer, bowler and card player and enjoyed casino trips. During World War II Frank was a Radio Operator and an Aerial Gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. He was shot down on his forty-first bombing mission, landed in the water and floated for three days on a life raft in the Mediterranean, and was then picked up by the Germans. He spent over two years behind barbed wire as a Prisoner of War. Most of his POW time was at Stalag 17B. A recent highlight was being on an Honor Flight to Washington, DC. Frank is survived by one son, Kurt Christensen, and his wife Marilee Knapik-Christensen of Racine and one daughter, Faye, and her husband, Jim Bonini of Menomonee Falls; nine grandchildren, Allison and Toni Bonini; Britany (Scott) Kerns; Brooklyn Fisher; Denmark, Sahara, Seneca, Jericho and Caanan Knapik-Christensen; two great grandchildren, Jude and Elle; one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Robert Gerber and is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Frank was also preceded in death by one great granddaughter, Emmy Robin Kerns. Funeral services will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church, 2915 Wright Ave. on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Mound Cemetery with full military honors. There will be a visitation at Sturino Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until time of service.
