Francis L. "Jack" Burrell, age 90, of East Tawas and longtime Midland resident died Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Iosco Medical Facility in Tawas City. He was born on Feb. 20, 1922 in Averill, son of the late Elmer J. and Beatrice (Valentine) Burrell. Jack attended Midland schools, graduating from Midland High School in 1941. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre and at Normandy. Jack received the Purple Heart from injuries he received during battle. Jack worked for the Dow Chemical Co. as a lead burner and retired from there in 1973. He was a residential builder in Midland area for many years and had built over 110 houses in the area. Jack was an avid deer hunter and fisherman. He was a longtime member and past commander of the Midland American Legion Berryhill Post No. 165. Jack married the former Joanne (King) Johnson on Feb. 9, 1991 in East Tawas. He is survived by his wife; Joanne; one son, Gregory (Paula) Burrell of Midland; one daughter, Diana (Jolly) Richardson of Sanford; and step-children, Timothy (Marilyn) Johnson of Tawas City, Colleen (Robert) Sarki of Allendale and Kirk (April) Johnson of Tawas City. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Scott (Mary) Burrell, Jennifer (Mike) Dorn, Beth (John) Dunckel, Andrew (Amanda) Richardson, Kimberly (Guy) Gaskell and Kathryn (Jonathan) Getzinger; and 15 great grandchildren. Also surviving are nine step-grandchildren, Joshua and Jonathon Johnson, Erin (Matthew) Fate, Amy and Trisha Sarki, Jason (Maria) Johnson, Ryan (Tiffany) Johnson, Jenilee (Patrick) Jacques and Andrew Johnson. In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy, on Aug. 25, 2006; and by one brother, Dallas Burrell. Funeral Services took place Monday, June 4 at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home 1200 W. Wheeler St. Pastor Johnathan Schnose of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Tawas City, officiated with burial in Midland City Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by the Midland County Veterans and the Department of the U.S. Army.
