Claiborne, Evelyn This world lost a remarkable woman on Nov. 9, 2016. Evelyn Ochs Claiborne (age 98) died in Orlando at Westminster Towers, her home since 2004. She was born on August 19, 1918, in Springfield, Minn. to parents Cleo and Walter Ochs along with siblings Larry (deceased), Bob (deceased), Patty and Wally. Theirs was a musical family and Evelyn took piano and voice lessons as a young girl. She was often asked to play and sing in church and at community events. She graduated from St. Benedict College and honorably served in the WAVES during WWII. She was called to serve God as a Cenacle Sister and did so for ten years, one of which she spent in the Vatican. Disliking the cold, Evelyn moved to Orlando in the 60's. If you attended Lockhart Jr. High, you probably had Miss Ochs for music. In her Rock Lake neighborhood, she was known as Evie. She bravely took the neighborhood children Christmas caroling and gave them piano lessons. Her happiest accomplishment was being Henry Claiborne's wife. She spent many weekends with him at the hunting camp. They enjoyed fishing trips from Costa Rica to Alaska. Later they traveled extensively and were some of the first tourists to visit China. As with everything she did, Evelyn served God and others with positive enthusiasm. She took excellent care of our father, especially in his final years and we love her all the more for that. She is survived by her siblings, nieces, nephews and Henry's children, the large family she always wanted: Barbara (Dan) Funk, Tom (Janie) Claiborne, Julie (John) Rutledge, Louise (Bob) Walsh, nine grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. There will be a Memorial Mass in the chapel at St. James Catholic Church on Wed., Nov. 16 at 10:30 am.
