Evelyn “Ev” Johnson returned to her heavenly home on March 8th 2020 after a valiant battle with a long illness. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.
Evelyn was born to the lateCharles and Ellen Johnson, a pastor and a homemaker respectively. She was immersed in the Christian community that would be her lifelong support from an early age. She was an acolyte for her father as an adolescent and taught youth group to students as an adult. She graduated from the University of New York with a degree in mathematics and accepted a position as a high school math teacher in Long Island, where she would teach for 18 years.
Evelyn was blessed with a large and loving family. She married Her best friend and Jim Newton, on August 15, 1992 in Allentown, PA. Evelyn helped raise her four children with patience, discipline and humility. She taught them to read, write and solve complex equations, and often took them on long family trips to see the natural beauty of every state in the South and Midwest. From the very beginning, she dedicated her children to God and encouraged them to explore the beauty of the gospels, leading her eldest son, Mark, to become a jr pastor.
Evelyn was an educator at heart. She was kind and soft-spoken, and always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how small. She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace with herbcreator.
Charlie is survived by her husband, Jimmy; her sons Mark, Tim and Derrick Newton; her daughters Jeanne Hooper and Nancy Hale; his grandchildren, sisters brothers and host of family and friends.
Charlie will be buried at the Holy Lord Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. on March 15th, with a reception to follow at the First United Methodist Church. Reverend James Clark will officiate the service.
