SIDNEY — Eugene F. Wheeler, 99, of Sidney, passed away at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at Upper Valley Medical Center.
He was born on Dec. 26, 1916, in Walker County, Georgia, the son of the late Daniel and Mary (Forney) Wheeler. On March 12, 1939, he married Louise O. Williams who preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 2003.
Eugene is survived by two daughters, Monnie (John) Williamson and Patricia Wheeler, both of Sidney; two adopted sons, Jeffery (Deborah) and Thomas (Laura Jane) Wheeler, both of Sidney; one sister, Martha Maxwell, of Cleveland; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by nine sisters.
Eugene served the Sidney area as public servant throughout his life in many roles, including custodial work for various churches and banks, part-time work for the city of Sidney, and driving a school bus for the City School System from which he retired. Prior to that, he had worked as a boiler fireman for the Lafayette Cotton Mill in Georgia. Eugene enjoyed fishing, watching sports, and hosting his annual Labor Day weekend fish fry, which he did for 37 years.
Eugene attended Sidney First United Methodist Church, where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Almeda Warren officiating.
There will be no visitation prior to the service.
