Esther Wiess Obituary

May 18, 1938 - Aug 01, 2026

This obituary is administered by:

Esther Wiess, 88, amazing mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend, somewhat honest card player, quiltmaker extraordinaire, and overall force to be reckoned with, died Saturday, August 1st, 2026. Esther was born May 18, 1938 in Thealka, Kentucky to the late Paris and Sophia (McCloud) Kimbler. She spent her childhood growing up with her siblings, Ray, Roy, Judy, Joyce, and Bill creating memories she would cherish and share her entire life.

She eventually left the beloved hills of Eastern Kentucky behind, and settled in Marion, Ohio. There she raised her children, Bev (Shawn), Scott, Jeff (Edith), Mitch, and Andy (Stacey). After her son Mitch was lost at 21 years of age in a tragic crash, Esther dedicated a significant portion of her life to helping families impacted by drunk driving. She worked to start the Marion chapter of MADD in 1987, worked with local legislators on drunk driving reforms, and helped pass laws to lower the legal DUI limit in the State of Ohio.

Once she finally got the last kid out of the house, she and her husband Cy relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. Esther fell in love with her adopted city and often shared stories of her new friends. During this time, she finally got her song recorded that she had written years ago. In the twilight of her life, she spent time writing a book that she was very proud of titled Death on Stewart’s Ferry. She left it to her youngest son, Andy, to complete the saga. Embracing her natural feistiness, Esther was not shy about reaching out to any level of politician to let them know how they were doing, and was always willing to work and advocate for those that needed a voice.

Esther spent the 30 years after the passing of her husband living as an independent, brave, and vibrant woman. She had a profound impact on each of her grandchildren, serving as a role model, trusted confidante, constant source of encouragement and love, and a safe place to turn. They are grateful for her consistency in their lives, and to be able to surround her with love during her last days.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, as well as her son Mitch, a great-granddaughter, and her husband Cy Wiess. She is survived by her remaining 4 children, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, those that wish to honor her can make donations to MADD or the American Cancer Society.

The family invites anyone interested in celebrating her life and love to a graveside service scheduled for September 12, 2026 at 10:00am at Marion Cemetery (620 Delaware Ave.).

You can to the family or in memory of Esther Wiess.
