FAIR HAVEN - Emma Elizabeth LaPlaca, 87, a longtime resident of Fair Haven, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 30, 2016, at the Our House Residential Care in Rutland, following a long illness. She was born on July 7, 1929, in Whitehall, New York, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Gardner) Fountain. Mrs. LaPlaca grew up in Whitehall, graduating from the Whitehall High School in 1946. She was employed by the Fair Haven Union High School in the Guidance Office as an administrative assistant for over 20 years, retiring in 1995. Mrs. LaPlaca was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church and the Castleton Senior Center. She loved her fur friend, Annie, reading, traveling and was an avid Duke University basketball fan. Survivors include a daughter, Petrina "Petie" (John Jr.) teRiele of Castleton; four sons Stephen (Gerry) Whalen of Fair Haven, Robert (Pegge Shephard) Whalen in Hyde Park, Paul LaPlaca of Fair Haven and Daniel (Carla) LaPlaca of Lyman, South Carolina; two sisters Mary Carao of Hudson Falls, New York, and May Gibson of Texas; two brothers Howard Fountain of Hamburg, New York, and Maurice Fountain of Lake Havasu, Arizona; nine grandchildren Philip Whalen, Stephanie Gardner, Tobrina Calvin, Samantha Deeley, Mandy Daley, Jaime Gillen, Ryan Whalen, Alexandria Jordan LaPlaca and Gabriella Kate LaPlaca; 16 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Whalen, in 1958; her former husband, Peter LaPlaca, in 1991; two brothers and a sister. Private funeral services will be held at the Durfee Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Whitehall, New York.
