Elwin Nelder Symonds, 83, of Middle Sackville, NS, departed this world on August 14, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love and faith. Born on August 21, 1939, in Halifax, NS, Elwin led a life of devotion to his family, community, and the Lord.
Elwin was a cherished husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce, and their three sons, Nelson and Ian of Montreal, Que., and Jordon of Halifax, NS. Elwin's love extended beyond his biological family, as he embraced his three stepchildren, Craig States of Vancouver, BC, Marla States of Florida, and Michelle States of Toronto, ON. Treasuring family bonds, Elwin leaves behind ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and forged strong relationships with special children, Cedric (Linda) Williams, and his special friend and prayer partner, Leamon David. Elwin is also survived by his sister, Genevieve Symonds of Montreal, Que., sister-in-law, Sharon Symonds of Cole Harbour, NS, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elwin's journey was preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. Calvin Symonds and Victor Symonds, and his sisters, Loretta Lucas, Thelma Marsman, and Georgina Parsons. He found solace and deep spiritual connection as a dedicated member and former Deacon of Emmanuel AME Church. Committed to his godly calling, Elwin actively served in the men's Brotherhood, men's Ministry of Emmanuel, as an usher, and even volunteered his time as a Sunday School teacher. Additionally, he took pride in being the esteemed first chairperson of the Prostate Cancer Canada (BINS) group. Elwin's steadfast devotion to the Lord emanated in his interactions, guided by his favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13, reminding us all that "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me."
To honor Elwin's life and pay respects, visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, accompanied by a solemn Layman's Service at 7:00 PM. The Reverend Dr. Lemont J. Anderson will officiate the Funeral Service on Thursday, August 17, at 11:00 AM, both within the hallowed walls of Emmanuel AME Church.
In reflecting Elwin's spirit of empathy and caring, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions in his name be made to the Prostate Cancer Canada Group or the Emmanuel AME Church Renovation Funds. The contributions will continue to uplift the causes closest to Elwin's compassionate heart.
The Symonds family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of VG Hospital 7A Palliative Care Unit for their unwavering support throughout Elwin's illness.
Elwin Nelder Symonds will be remembered as a pillar of faith, love, and resilience. His memory will forever resonate in the hearts of those privileged to have shared in his journey.
