PLATT Elizabeth Ellen, was born on February 11, 1936 in Orange, NJ to Reverend Dr. Charles A. Platt, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Nee Tucker) Platt. She grew up in Ridgewood, NJ, graduating in 1953. She passed February 22, 2017 in Medford Leas, NJ. Elizabeth was truly a lifelong learner. She graduated from the College of Wooster (OH) in 1957 with a BA in History. During the 1957-1958 school year, she attended the New College University in Edinburgh, Scotland, studying Theology. In 1961, she received her M.A. from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary (N.Y.). She earned her PhD from
Harvard University in 1973. Her field of study was Near Eastern Languages and Civilization (in the Old Testament). Her professional experiences included Professor of the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible at the University of Dubuque (IA) from 1988-2007. From 1982-1988, she served as Associate/ Assistant Minister at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, NJ. Between 1976 and 1996, she was the objects Registrar for the Madaba Plains Archaeological Project in the country of Jordan. Participating in these summer digs was a highlight of her career. From 1973-1980, she was an Assistant Professor of the Bible at Rutgers University (NJ). From 1958-1963, she taught Religion at Emma Willard School in Troy, NY. During her professional career she inspired and encouraged many students. Some of these students became lifelong friends. Elizabeth shared her extensive knowledge of the Bible throughout the country by giving many presentations, lectures and serving on panels. Her enthusiasm for her topic was infectious. To continue her love of learning and to show appreciation for the love and care she received at Medford Leas, we suggest any memorials you care to give be sent to the Staff Scholarship Fund, One Medford Leas Way. Platt, Jr (Mary Ann), of Decatur, IL, sister in law Arlene Platt of Pompton Plains, NJ, nephews Corry Platt of Cary, NC, Ryan, Platt (Lisa) of Concord, NC, Charles A. Platt III (Bethanie) of Mt, Zion, IL, and niece Jennifer Platt of Decatur, IL. She is also survived by 4 great nephews and 2 great nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Compton Tucker Platt. As per Elizabeth's wishes, she was cremated. Her ashes will be interred next to her parents in Kansas City at a later date. (
