It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edna Matthis, who was born on February 19, 1940, and passed away on October 24, 2024, in Winchester, Kentucky, United States. She was the beloved wife of Joseph Franklin Matthis, Sr., whom she married in 1961. He preceded her in death in 2019.

Edna was the loving daughter of Robert L. Banks, Sr. and Elsie Banks. She was the loving sister to Robert L Banks, Jr. and his wife; Laura Banks. She leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication through her four children: Rose-Marie Matthis, Therese (Matthis) Jones, Joseph Franklin Matthis, Jr. (spouse Patricia Matthis), and Mark Matthis. She also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: John Hurd, Richard Lawrence Phillips, Bethanie Elaine Joy Phillips, Jessica Robin Jones and Michael Lee Bivins, Jr. and her cherished nephew Robert Douglas Banks. Edna loved all children, especially her Great Granddaughter Margaret Elise Gamboa. To her children, Edna was a woman of faith and a strong moral compass. She raised her children to know and love the Lord Jesus Christ.

Edna was an alumni of Eastern Kentucky University where she studied Art. After school she dedicated her career to serving others as a healthcare professional at Eastern State Hospital. She retired in 1990 after many years of service, where she provided compassion and care to the wounded soldiers. She was also actively involved in the Sacred Heart organization, where she was recognized for her unwavering dedication and service.

In her free time, Edna enjoyed exploring her creative side through hobbies such as oil painting, sewing design, and upholstery. She enjoyed acting and taking on other identities and characters. She loved music and was an accomplished dancer and had a beautiful singing voice. She was filled with youthful energy and had a playful, mischievious streak which often delighted her children, friends and family. Her playfulness and artistic talent brought joy to those around her and will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.

Edna Matthis will be deeply missed by her family, especially her two aunts Julie Dixon and Grace Evans and her cousins Mary Philbeck, Tina Barrett, Fannie Lamb, Shannon Martin, and Darla Lawrence. She will also be missed by her friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
