Doyle Henry Kelley was born on May 18, 1930 in Sanford, Mississippi. He spent most of his early childhood in Oklahoma, raised by his grandparents, Bill and Pearl Coin. Doyle, his grandparents, and other family members moved to Bakersfield, California in 1936.
In 1940 the family moved to the Limoneira ranch west of Santa Paula, California. Doyle attended Olivelands School mostly attended by Limoneira ranch employee’s children, and then Santa Paula High school, graduating in 1948. Shortly thereafter he spent one year in the Army followed by six years in the Army reserve. During his time in the Army reserve, Doyle worked in the oil fields in the Santa Paula area. In 1954 he met and married Janice Lowry, a local Santa Paula girl. In 1955 Doyle accepted a temporary position as a police officer with the Santa Paula police department, retiring in 1985 having reached the rank of Lieutenant. While working at the police department, he attended night school, graduated from Ventura College, then graduated from the University of La Verne. In 1974 Doyle received and accepted an invitation to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. After his police retirement in 1985, Doyle again went to work for the Santa Paula police department for another fifteen years working part time as a civilian property officer.
He is preceded in death by grandson Travis Bullock. He is survived by his wife Janice, son Doug, wife Kim, daughter Doylene Bullock, husband Terry Bullock, grandchildren Michelle Watkins, husband Joe, Jason Kelley, Dustin Bullock, wife Jenna, Jessica Kelley, and one great grandchild Travis Doyle Bullock.
