Douglas R. Samuels Obituary

Mar 09, 1960 - May 12, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Douglas R. SamuelsWest Melbourne, FLDouglas Robert Samuels, our beloved son, brother, Dad, G-Pop, mentor, and friend passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, from natural causes on Friday, May 12, 2017. Doug was born on March 9, 1960 in Harbor City, CA to W. Dean Samuels and Sheila Samuels. Doug married the love of his life, Linda (Urry) Samuels, on July 15, 1982 in the Salt Lake Temple. He leaves behind his parents Dean (Georgia) Samuels and Sheila Samuels, his wife Linda, his five children: Michael (Loubna), Cori (Aaron) Meltzer, John (Caroline), Gina (Colten) Millett, and Carly (Brandon) Hatch; his brothers: Dean (Lori), Dave (Erin), Dan (Maria), and Aaron (Denise); his brothers-in-law John (Moana) Urry and Russ Urry, and sister-in-law Lisa Martin; his aunt Shirley Oliver; his grandchildren Zane, Sean, and "Baby Jade" Meltzer (he came up with her name and it stuck), and also many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Doug's accomplishments were many, not the least of which was his noteworthy leadership as the CEO of Space Coast Credit Union, which position he held from the age of 37 until his passing. At work, he was known for making a point to know his employees' names, faces, and families. However, anyone who knew him outside of the context of his career would often be surprised to learn of his notable position, due to the humble and unassuming manner with which he carried himself. This might be due to the fact that no matter what he accomplished elsewhere, Doug's true priorities were always at home. Doug absolutely loved his family. All of his hobbies and interests were oriented around spending time with his wife and kids. He always took time to play with and teach them when they were little, and as they grew up, made himself consistently available to talk, to listen, and to advise. With his wife, children and friends, he built a small ranch behind his home where he was able to teach the value of hard work and spend time with those he loved. Doug was also a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and served in many capacities over the years - his favorite, however, was always working with the youth of the church. Doug will be remembered by all who knew him as a remarkable man who was a relentless force for good in every facet of his life. He was tireless in his efforts to uplift and educate everyone with whom he came into contact, offering sage advice and principled insights to anyone who needed it. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he was constantly solving problems and serving others in the uniquely discerning and insightful ways for which he was known. The principles he taught and lives he changed will be a testament to the incredible man Doug was and the life he lived long after he is gone. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 19 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1801 S. Fiske Blvd, Rockledge, Florida.  Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to the services that morning and at the Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home, 1010 Palmetto Ave, Melbourne, Florida on Thursday, May 18 from 6 to 8 pm. Interment will be at Florida Memorial Gardens. brownliemaxwell.com
