Dorothy JohnsonDorothy Louise (Larson) Johnson, known by many in Sioux Falls as Grandma Dot, passed away on Monday October 22, 2017 at the age of 97 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. She was born on August 11, 1920 in Mandan, North Dakota to Earnest and Alma Louise (Ramberg) Larson. The first three years of her life were spent on the farm near Center, North Dakota that her parents homesteaded in the early 1900's. Little Dot as her brothers called her, was the baby of the family with three older brothers, Gordon, nicknamed Moc, Earnest nicknamed Ram, and Kenneth. In 1923 the family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and bought a home near the First Swedish Baptist Church which became a focal point of her life. Dot's father passed away in January of 1929 when she was just eight years old. Her older brothers took care of supporting the family and Dot contributed when as a fourteen-year-old, she got a job as a paper girl for the St. Paul Dispatch and Pioneer Press. During High School Dorothy wrote articles in a youth column for the St. Paul Dispatch. After graduating from Johnson High School, Dorothy attended business school and worked for the Dispatch and Pioneer Press as an Administrative Assistant. On May 11, 1946, Dorothy married George Edward Johnson, the love of her life. George worked in his family's grocery store. Dorothy and George lost four babies, Carolyn Louise, Kristin Louise, Robert George, and Lynn Marie. They were grateful to raise Paul and Ann Louise. In between babies, Dorothy worked at 3M. She was a stay at home mom for 11 years. She then spent 21 years working as an Administrative Assistant at St. Paul Johnson High School. In retirement she spent time enjoying family, friends and the outdoors. Dorothy was very involved at the Payne Avenue Baptist Church, which later became Trinity Baptist Church. She put her trust in Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord at age 13, and her relationship with Jesus has permeated her whole life. She was a faithful and fun wife and mother a caring and helpful neighbor, a diligent worker and a loyal volunteer. She and George were always cheering on their children and grandchildren in sports and music and academics. George and Dorothy moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 2001. Dorothy and George were best friends and could often be seen walking hand in hand. Dorothy Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, four of her babies, her brothers, and her dear George. She is survived by her son Paul and his wife Carol, their children Chad Langness, Micah Johnson and Kristin Johnson and great grandchildren Alma, Aida and Viggo. She is also survived by her daughter Ann and her husband Lyn Tschetter and their children Joshua and his wife Rachel Tschetter and Jessie and her husband Peter Halverson and great grandchildren Sophia and William, Liesl and Hazel.Funeral Service will be held Friday October 27th at 2:00 pm in the Oakwood Chapel at Central Baptist Church, Sioux Falls, SD.
