Vanderheyden, DonaldDonald "Don" Vanderheyden, 89, Green Bay, died peacefully on Friday, May 12, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 30, 1927, in Green Bay, to Hiram and Louisa (Zietz) Vanderheyden.Don served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 through 1948 and had been stationed in Asia. On August 15, 1948, he went on a blind date with Doris John. On February 18, 1950, Don got to marry the love of his life, Doris, at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church. Don worked for Proctor and Gamble from 1949 until he retired as an Employee Services Manager in 1988. He was a charter member of St Jude Catholic Church and currently belonged to St. Matthew Catholic Church. Don volunteered with The Concerned Hearts Club, with Unity Hospice, and with the YMCA.Don and Doris enjoyed their cottage on Surprise Lake and vacationing in Arizona for 17 years. They also loved their travels to Jamaica. He enjoyed putzing around, building rock walls, playing bocce ball, shafskopf, and bingo. Don especially enjoyed his trip with the Honor Flight in 2013. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Susie and Joe Hilgers, Black Creek; Sammie and Jim McDonald, Two Rivers, Sally Cubitt, Green Bay; Stacy and Gary O'Dell, New Franken; his grandchildren, Molly (Brad) Dunlap, James (Erin) McDonald, Jake (fiancé Zitsi Mirakhur) McDonald, Cassie McDonald, Brady (special friend Emily Blaney) Cubitt; his step-grandchildren, Joe (special friend Jenny Gill) Hilgers, Jr., Travis (Andrea) Hilgers; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Gavin, and Emi McDonald, Nora and Max Dunlap; his step-great-grandchildren, Ashlei, Alethia, Paige, Aspen and Wyatt Hilgers; a brother-in-law, Richard (Betty) John; many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.Don was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; a son-in-law, Tom Cubitt; seven brothers and sisters, Eva (Joe) Kapla, Lucille (Ralph) Vandertie, Violet (Clarence) Demmer, Lorraine (David) DeVetter, Irene "DeDe" Vanderheyden, Sonny (Iva) Vanderheyden, and Vernon (Marie) VanderheydenFriends may call as St. Matthew Catholic Church, 130 St. Matthew St, from 9-11:00 a.m., Wednesday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Robert Kabat officiating, the service will be concluded with full military honors. Entombment will be in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.
