Koskinen, Donald S.Donald S. Koskinen, age 88, of Menasha passed away on Thursday, April 20th surrounded by family at home, a place he loved for more than 50 years. He was born on October 18, 1928 in Hamilton, OH. He was the son of Rachel and Einar Koskinen, brother to Doris Burr. Don moved with his family to Menominee, WI where he graduated from Menominee High School. Following graduation, Don proudly served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Augusta, GA and later in Alaska. After his service in the Army, Don enrolled at Lawrence College and graduated in 1950. While at Lawrence, he was active in Phi Delta Theta fraternity, swimming and diving and track and field. He credited Lawrence with much of his success in business and in life and remained connected to Lawrence throughout his life. Don served as President of the Lawrence trustees at the college. Under his direction, the college hired its longest serving President, Richard Warch, with whom he shared both a mutual friendship and tremendous respect.After graduation, Don worked at Wausau High School as a biology teacher for one year prior to enlisting in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1954. Don was home on leave in Wausau when he met the love of his life, Jean Alexander. Don and Jean were married on August 28th, 1954. They had four children and were married for 52 wonderful years. Don joined the George Banta Company in their Boston sales office in 1954. Don and Jean started their married life in Boston and lived there for their first 7 years together. They developed many life-long friends during their years in Massachusetts. In 1961, Don was transferred to the home office of George Banta Company in Menasha. He was Vice President of Sales at Banta before ultimately being named President in 1974, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1990. Banta went through many significant milestones during his tenure and he appreciated the opportunity to work with his many colleagues who were also Banta employees for their entire careers. Following retirement, Don and Jean cherished time spent at their family cottage in Sayner, WI on Plum Lake. The cottage has been used by Jean's family since the early 1900s. They also appreciated spending winter months in Tucson, AZ, including many visits from family and friends.Don had many interests including a life-long love of sailing beginning at an early age, earning him the name of "Salty". He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, tennis, skiing and golf. He was an animal lover and had many wonderful pets, including most recently his cats Rufus and Lily. They provided such comfort to him following Jean's passing. Don was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Plum Lake Golf Club at the time of his death. Previously he served as a Director of Fox Cities Bank, First National Bank - Fox Valley and a board member of United Way - Fox Cities, Theda Clark Hospital, as well as the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region. He was previously a member of the Rainbow Lodge, Ojibwa, WI and North Shore Golf Club in Menasha. Don was a loyal Green Bay Packers season ticket holder for over 50 years. He touched so many lives in both his personal and professional life and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.He is survived by his four children: Walter (Margaret) Koskinen, Anne Koskinen Leighton, David (Julie) Koskinen and John (Susan) Koskinen. He is further survived by his grandchildren: Steward (Stacie), Elizabeth (John), Alex, Ben, Olivia, Jack and Matt. Don was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean; his parents, Einar and Rachel; sister, Doris Burr; sister-in-law, Nancy Anne Cordaro; and granddaughter, Clare Alexandra Leighton. His family thanks Dave Roocks, Valley VNA, Hospice, Pam Zielinski, Duane Johnson and Bonnie Eyre for their friendship, support and loving care of Don, in particular over the last few years.There will be private family internment at Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah, WI. A date for a memorial service will be announced later. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Inc, ThedaCare Foundation or the Fox Valley Humane Association.
