Deborah was born September 11, 1959, to F.L Matthews and Stella V. Matthews in Benoit, Mississippi. She was the oldest of their four children.

She accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Gazie M.B. Church under the leadership of Rev. E.D Simpson. Deborah earned her Masters Degree in Education at Mississippi Valley State University. She adored and loved teaching English at Ray Brook School for the Gifted.

She is preceded in death by her father, F.L Matthews; and her brother, Earnest Matthews.

She is survived by her husband, Luther Washington of Crystal Springs, MS; her mother, Stella Matthews of Benoit, MS; three brothers: Fellem Matthews, Clifton Matthews, and Dennis Matthews of Benoit, MS; her courageous only son, Deonte Matthews; two beautiful daughters, Stephanie and Darla Matthews; as well as, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
