Wilkes County, North Carolina lost a vibrant member of its community on October 25, 2024, when Danny Hershel Combs passed away at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Born on November 16, 1950, Danny's life was a testament to love, laughter, and service, spanning nearly 74 years.
Danny was the beloved son of James L. and Ada M. Combs, born in the rural embrace of Wilkes County, where he developed a deep love for nature that he carried throughout his life. He was fiercely devoted to his family, and his legacy of love lives on through them. He is survived by his devoted daughter Emma and her husband Jerry James of Seneca, South Carolina, as well as his treasured granddaughters, Catrina Byrd of Westminster, South Carolina, and Jenna Broome of Seneca, South Carolina. His presence will be deeply missed by his sisters, Frances (Thelb) Burchette of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, Brenda Ziemer of Millers Creek, North Carolina, and Mary (Roby) Hawkins of Hays, North Carolina. Numerous nieces, nephews, and their children also continue to carry forward Danny's spirit of joy and kindness.
A Vietnam Veteran, Danny served his country with honor from 1971 to 1976. His skill as a sharpshooter earned him recognition and respect among his peers. Even after his retirement as a veteran, the values of service and dedication he embodied continued to be a guiding force in his life.
Danny was known for his infectious sense of humor, always ready to share a laugh or a joke, even if it meant risking his teeth falling out. He had a gift for making people smile and was legendary for his culinary skills, especially his much-loved chicken soup, peach cobbler, and gravy. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and horseback riding—activities that connected him with the natural beauty of his birthplace in Wilkes County.
A life so richly lived is celebrated by memories and stories shared among family and friends. Danny was preceded in death by several loved ones, including his sisters, Emma Jean Brown, Rebecca Lail, Sylvia Deal, his brothers, James D. Combs (Jimmy), Dwight E. Combs (Butch), and his faithful dog, Bear, who undoubtedly greeted him with a wagging tail in the beyond.
The family invites all who knew and loved Danny to join them for a gathering in celebration of his life. This will take place on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at 5 p.m. at Cub Creek Park, 206 S. Bridge St, Wilkesboro, NC.
