Clarence Carlton BurtSan AngeloClarence Carlton (Mike) Burt passed quietly from this earth on Dec. 8, 2016. He was born on March 5, 1920 in Temple, Texas at the Scott and White Hospital to Shelley and Bonnie Burt.In 1921, they came to Colorado City. He entered first grade at six years old. Since you didn't go to school until you were 7, they had to pay for him to attend early. Mike graduated from high school in 1937 and in 1939 he entered Texas A & M. When Mike graduated in 1943, he was ranked 4th in his class and immediately entered the
Army Air Corps cadet training. Commissioned at Yale as a second lieutenant, he served in Germany till August 1946. While in Europe, he was stationed with the 9th Air Force in Munich. Mike worked in the bombed out BMW Factory two stories down where the jet engines were built and tested getting to meet Wernher Von Braun. Back in the states, Mike taught school for two years in San Antonio and then went to work for Magnolia Petroleum for ten years in the land department. In 1953, Mike married Erna Lou Merrill and to this union was born Jane Ann. Erna Lou preceded him in death in Jan. 2007. After Magnolia closed the office in Colorado City, Mike went back to teaching. In 1969, Mike received his Master's degree from Hardin Simmons University and became an assistant principal. From 1972-1974, he was the last principal of Wallace School. He became a member of the City Council in 1963 and served as mayor from 1970-75. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Council of Governments. In Aug. 1977, Mike was appointed as Mitchell County Tax Assessor. From 1979-96, he was Mitchell County's chief appraiser. He retired in Jan. 1997. From 1960-2005 he owned and operated Burt Oil Co. Mike was in the first class of Colorado High Wall of Fame. He was also a Master Mason and a Shriner. In 2016, he was honored by the Masons with the Golden Trowel award. Mike was a member of First United Methodist where he served as Church Treasurer for nine years. He moved to San Angelo in 2008 to be near his only child Jane Ann and her husband Jack Srader who survive.Funeral service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Colorado City with Rev. Larry Bass officiating. Interment will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery with military and masonic rites to be performed.There will be no formal visitation, in lieu of flowers please consider donations to the First United Methodist Church of Colorado City.Arrangements have been entrusted to the Kiker-Seale Funeral home.
