Charles Wayne "Chuck" Moen 1929—2016Charles Wayne "Chuck" Moen of Freeport died at FHN Memorial Hospital, Saturday, September 17, 2016. He was born on March 24, 1929, in rural Lake Mills, Iowa, to Stephen W. and Cora H. (Troe) Moen. He came to Freeport with his family in 1931. On June 15, 1951, he married Della Mae Utesch in Chicago, IL. After graduating from Freeport High School in 1947, Chuck attended Carthage College in Carthage, IL where he met the love of his life and graduated in 1951, with a BS in History and Education. He also received a Masters of Education from Northern IL University in 1959. He enlisted in the Illinois National Guard 44th Infantry Division during college and served on active duty from Feb 1952 to Feb 1953. He was blessed to be able to participate in an Honor Flight in the fall of 2015. He began teaching in Freeport in the fall of 1953 at Center School. He taught 4th to 6th grade for 32 years before retiring in 1985. Chuck's passions were his faith, his family, learning, and his Norwegian heritage. He was constantly seeking to learn new things and pass that knowledge on to others around him. He loved reading, woodworking, and supporting his wife and family. He was a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Freeport and served there in numerous capacities over the years. He served on the Evangelical Lutheran Church Global Missions committee, was an active participant at the Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center in Oregon, IL, and supported Lutheran World Relief Projects. He was very active in the Stephenson County Soil and Water Conservation District as an associate board member and volunteer, served with the Blackhawk Hills Regional Council RC&D, and was a volunteer with the Natural Resources Conservation Service of the USDA. In 2015 Chuck and Della were presented with the Conservation Friends of the District Award by the Stephenson County Farm Bureau. He was also active in the Illinois Retired Teachers Association at the county and state level and the Golden K Kiwanis Club, serving as President twice and Lt. Governor of I-I District Division 12. In the past, he spent over 25 years working with the Boy Scouts at troop, District, and Council levels. He has belonged to several Norwegian heritage organizations over the years and was currently a member of the Sons of Norway Ostestaden Lodge in Monroe, WI. Chuck is survived by daughters, Mae (Delvin) Trost and Peggy Wohlford, both of Lena, and Carol (John) Nielsen of Mt. Horeb, WI; six grandchildren, Trisha (Dale) Forrester of Freeport, Colin (Karla) Trost of Bolingbrook, AF Capt Joshua (Dorothy) Wohlford of Navarre, Florida, AF Capt Justin Wohlford of Perry, Georgia, Matthew Nielsen, PhD, of Tucson, Arizona, and Kristina Nielsen of Philadelphia, PA; and 4 great-grandchildren, Sydnee, Max, and Zoee Forrester of Freeport, and Sonnet Wohlford of Navarre, Florida. He is also survived by one sister-in-law, Donna (Chris) Bredlow of Madison, WI, six nieces and nephews, and his beloved 4-legged companion, Rikka. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, in-laws, infant daughter, Mae Jean, sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Deane Mitchell, brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Judy Moen, sister-in-law, Cheryl Utesch, and son-in-law, Randy Wohlford. Visitation for family and friends will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, September 25, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Freeport, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded and a Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 26, at Prince of Peace. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name.
