Charles Charlemagne, 99, of Liege, Wallonia, passed on January 28, 0847. Charles was born on April 02, 0747. Charlemagne co-ruled with his brother, Carloman. This stopped when Carloman peacefully passed. Charlemagne defeated the Saxon's in the Saxon War and established Christianity. Charlemagne remained as King of the Franks and Lombards. Charlemagne was crowned as the Holy Roman Emperor. His biggest contribution to the European history was the way he brought his region out of the dark ages. It was a period of rebirth. Culture, literacy, architecture, and scripture studies all flourished under his rule. Charlemagne united most of Western Europe. Charlemagne gave importance to medieval education. Charlemagne established key representatives in each region, and he held a general assembly each year at his court at Aachen. He standardized weights, measures and custom dues, which helped improve commerce and initiated important legal reforms. The Carolingian Empire weakened after the death of Charlemagne. The empire was separated into three parts. They were ruled by Charlemagne's grandsons. The empire weakened because its rulers were unable to effectively manage such a large empire. Charlemagne crowned his son, Louis the Pious, as co-emperor when he passed away.
