YORK Charles A. Shamoian, M.D., passed away peacefully at home on May 12, 2014. He leaves behind his true companion and wife of fifty-two years, Paula Fae, his adored children, Paula Ann Katze and Chaz Shamoian, his much loved son-in-law John, daughter-in-law Michele, and grandchildren Jason, Evan and Briana. His generosity, love and warmth shone through in every moment with his family. Charles was a first generation American, born on October 5, 1931, in Worcester, Mass. to Garabed and Anna Shamoian. After receiving his PhD and MD from Tufts University in Massachusetts, he joined the faculty of Weill Cornell Medical College. His distinguished 38-year career included serving as Cornell's Director of the Division of Geriatric Services and President of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry. According to his colleagues, Charles "epitomized the healing physician, asking little for himself, but demonstrating compassion, sensitivity, and dedication to his patients above and beyond at all times." Charles loved gardening, dogs of all shapes and sizes, first edition books, Yankees baseball, Brooks Brothers shirts, CNN news, and peanut butter anything. As a physician, a colleague, a husband, a father and a grandfather, he will be deeply missed and always loved. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the York County SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, PA 17406.
