Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.) Catherine T. BetzAGE: 92 • Formerly of CollingswoodFormerly of Collingswood, NJ, age 92, passed away on May 11, 2017 in El Paso, TX. She was born on October 26, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Robert and Cecilia Betz. She grew up in Collingswood and graduated Collingswood High School, class of 1942. She leaves behind three sisters, Mary Mullen, Sue Beier, Rose Marie Szostowski; and 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Taylor and Joan Carrano.Col. Betz graduated Jefferson School of Nursing as an RN in 1945, received her BSN at Temple University in 1955 and her master's degree from Duke University in 1962. As an RN, she worked in the emergency room at Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia and joined the Army Reserves until she was called to active duty. She served in the US Army Nurse Corps from 1951 to 1976. She fought in the Korean War in 1951 as a 2nd Lieutenant and in the Vietnam War in 1966 as the Chief Nurse of the 3rd Field Hospital. She also served in Germany from 1956 to 1959 and in the US Army's Surgeon General's Office from 1970 to 1973. Her final assignment was Chief Nurse at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss Texas. At her retirement ceremony she was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.Upon retirement in El Paso, Kitty became very active in Our Lady of Assumption Roman Catholic Church where she served as a lector and a resource manager. She loved to play golf with her friends, swim in her pool, look at the El Paso Mountains and cherish her schnauzers.Funeral services were held in El Paso on May 18, 2017. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
