Colonel Catherine T. "Kitty" Betz, US Army (Ret), formerly of Springfield VA, passed away on May 11, 2017 in El Paso Texas. She was born on Oct 26, 1924 in Philadelphia PA to the late Robert and Cecilia Betz. She grew up in Collingswood NJ. She leaves behind three sisters, Mary Mullen, Sue Beier, Rose Marie Szostowski, and 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Betty Taylor and Joan Carrano. Col Betz graduated from Jefferson College of Nursing, Temple University in 1955 and received her master's degree from Duke University in 1962. She served in the Us Army Nurse Corps from 1951 to 1976. She fought in the Korean War in 1951 as a 2nd Lieutenant and in the Viet Nam War in 1966 as the Chief Nurse of the 3rd Field Hospital. She also served in Germany from 1956 to 1959 and in the US Army's Surgeon General's Office from1970 to 1973. Her final assignment was Chief Nurse at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss Texas. She was awarded with the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf Cluster. Upon retirement in El Paso, Kitty became very active in Our Lady of Assumption Roman Catholic Church where she served as a lector and a resource manager. She loved to play golf with her friends, swim in her pool, look at the El Paso Mountains and cherish her schnauzers. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 18, 2017 from 9:00am to 11:30am at Martin Funeral Home Central. Rosary will be held Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 12:00pm at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, funeral mass to follow. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at Arlington Cemetery at a date to be determined.
