HYRUM - Carla Alta Peterson Garner, 59, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010.She was born on Jan. 11, 1950, to Dewain Arnold and Alta Hillman Peterson of Lyman, Idaho. Her early years were spent in the shadows of the Teton Mountains of Idaho on the family farm, where she learned the value of hard work and self reliance. Carla is the third of five children. She graduated from Madison High in 1968, Ricks College in 1970, and BYU in 1972, where she earned her degree in education. Carla served in the Argentina East mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved the Argentine people and the Spanish language, which she utilized throughout her life. In 1975, she accepted a teaching position in Cassia County School District in Malta, Idaho. There she met Rodney K. Garner and fell in love. They were married March 5, 1976, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Carla was proud to be the mother of Dewain, Ray and Julie Garner. The family later moved to Hyrum, where she took a job at Lincoln Elementary as the English as a Second Language teacher. She loved all of the children who came through her classroom. In 2002, she was honored as Cache County School District Teacher of the Year. She served in many callings for the LDS Church and in her community. Carla loved spending time with her grandsons and other family members, and her home was often a meeting place for family.
