LAGRANGE — Calvin J. Evans, 90, of LaGrange, died peacefully at Miller's Merry Manor on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014. He was born on April 11, 1923, in LaGrange to Calvin E. and Blanch K. (Swank) Evans. Cal graduated from LaGrange High School in 1941 and studied electrical engineering at Purdue University. He owned and operated Evans Radio and TV Service from 1944-1956 and Evans Coal Company from 1956-1976. Cal was an avid amateur radio operator (W9LTR) from 1941-1987. He helped many families communicate with each other during World War II. He made contact with ham radio operators in 330 countries. In 1954, he was named the "Special Civil Defense Representative" in LaGrange County. Surviving Calvin is a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald C. and Peggy Evans of Binghamton, N.Y.; a daughter, Sandra Anderson of Mesa, Ariz.; their mother, Mabel Evans of LaGrange; four grandchildren, Marci (David) Tripicco of Johnson City, N.Y.; Michael Evans of Monrovia, Calif.; Heather Bellar of San Antonio, Texas; and Elisabeth Evans of Binghamton, N.Y.; and great –grandchildren, Courtney and Matthew Tripicco. Preceding Calvin in death were his parents and an infant brother, James C. Evans. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at the Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St., LaGrange. The Rev. Donald R. McGahan will officiate. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon until service time. Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery, LaGrange. Memorials may be contributed to The Masters Touch, C/O New Hope Baptist Church, 2900 N – 500 E, Kendallville, IN.
