Mrs.Burma L. Whitted Wilkins was born on August 13, 1938 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. She peacefully passed away on September 5, 2024, surrounded by her family, at the age of 86. She grew up in Washington, DC where she graduated from Mackin High School. She went onto college where she graduated with a Bachelors in Library Science from Howard University and a Masters in education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. During the 1950’s desegregation of schools, she was a litigate in the Supreme Court. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority along with her mother and younger sister. While at Howard University she met a dental student who became the late Dr.Willie T. Wilkins Jr. In 1960 she married Dr.Wilkins and moved to Greensboro, NC where she worked in the Guilford County Public school system for many years. While working in the social sciences division in 1971, she had a son, Willie Thomas Wilkins III. During her time as a mother in 1979, she became a den leader for the cub scouts. She served as the first woman Scoutmaster in the General Greene Council. Receiving multiple awards and even the Scouter's Key.She later moved from the public school system to Bennett College and onto GTCC where she retired in 2011. She leaves behind many loved ones including her brother, George R. Whitted Jr. (Norma), her sister, Miss Brynda J. Whitted, one son, Willie T. Wilkins III, five grandchildren; Alexander, Matthew, Alexandria, Isabella, Magdalena, 1 great grandchild, Grey, 2 cousins; Mrs.Judy Biagas and Mrs.Janice W. Hunter. 1 niece, 1 nephew, 2 great nieces and 3 great nephews. Mrs.Wilkins will be remembered for her generosity, her dedication to her grandchildren, and her unwavering faith. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
