Bernard Vann, 75, of Landover, MD passed on August 25, 2023. Bernard who was affectionately called “OG Bernie” or “Benny” by family and close friends was born May 25, 1948, in Greenville, Alabama, to the late Wadell Vann and Shirley Ann Jacobs. From this union two sons were born (Wadell Jr. and Bernard). His early years began in the Deep South. Bernard grew up in a poor rural community in the throes of segregation. As a child, Bernard witnessed his father pick cotton to support his family, he wore hand-me-down clothes and cardboard in his shoes.

In 1960, his family moved to Norwalk, CT for a better life. Bernard Attended public schools in Norwalk, CT. I’m 1969, he enlisted in the United States Army. Amid military life, Bernard united in marriage to the late Peggy R. Murray in September of 1975. From this union two daughters and one son were born, Ayesha, Stephanie, and Bernard Jr.

After his military career ended, Bernard because a proud homeowner and he worked for a private industry before becoming a public servant at the General Services Administration from which he retired. He then worked several part time positions just to keep busy.

Bernard gave his life to Christ as a young adult at Shiloh Baptist Churchqmd was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Wadell Jr., and his nephew Timothy Vann.

Bernard lived a simplistic life. He loved to play lottery numbers, smoke cigarettes and drink beer occasionally. He witnessed many life changing events over the decades including segregation and desecration. Yet, he never envisioned a black President, be he was fortunate to see that too.

Bernard loved to dismantle things and rebuild them especially cars; he had a particular interests in electrical engineering and refrigeration. He never followed written instructions. He said they were overrated. He loved to tell stories riddles with truths and most of all he loved to serve people. He was kind and gentle spirit with would aide family, neighbors, friends and strangers in need. I’m his later years, he enjoyed doing yardwork, working on home projects and spending time with grandchildren.

Bernard leaves to cherish his memory: two daughters, Ayesha Slaughter(John), and Stephanie Vann; One son Bernard Vann Jr; seven grandchildren- Kayla, Morgan, Latriese, Nigel, Dylan, Richard, and Milan. With a hand full of great grandchildren. And a host of relatives and friends.
